Did You Know? Water Testing

City residents may only receive a water report once each year, but the City of Sanford's Water Treatment Plant is constantly monitoring and testing our water to make sure it's safe.

In addition to daily and hourly tests, lab analysts sample and test 50 sites throughout Lee County each month to ensure the drinking water meets standards set forth in the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Water samples collected on December 11 for monthly testing.
The samples are tested onsite for pH, free ammonia, free chlorine, monochloramine, total chlorine, heterotrophic bacteria, and total coliform bacteria.

Test results are submitted to regulators to show that our water meets state and federal standards.

Want to know more about water testing? The Water Treatment Plant offers educational tours of its facility. Call 919-777-1800 to schedule a time for your group to visit!

3 Alarm Toy Drive Brings Comfort & Cheer To Burned Children

Local firefighters ready to play Santa for another year.

SANFORD – In 1996, two firefighters with the Sanford Fire Department envisioned a way to bring Christmas cheer to burned children. More than 20 years and thousands of gifts later, they're still at it.

"Our first goal was to support the Burn Center," explains David Nance, a long-time firefighter and co-founder of the 3 Alarm Toy Drive with fellow firefighter Frank Layton. "We just wanted to make those kids' lives a little bit easier, especially during Christmas," Nance says.

However, as the toy drive grew, the department has been able to supply gifts for Lee County Schools, the Department of Social Services, the Salvation Army, and other local charities.

For example, Nance and other firefighters took an enclosed 16-foot trailer full of toys, blankets, hygiene items, and more to the Rocky Mount Fire Department when a hurricane flooded that region. They also sent a load to Mississippi after a tornado ripped through several towns.

But the NC Jaycee Burn Center at UNC is near and dear to local firefighters' hearts, and their top priority. The Lee County chapter of the North Carolina Firefighters’ Burned Children Fund – also founded by Nance and Layton –provides support and assistance throughout the year to families of children who've been burned and local firefighters visit with patients at the Burn Center frequently.

Playing Santa is just one more way we can brighten the lives of those children and adults, adds Layton.

To learn more about the Lee County Firefighters' Burned Children Fund, go to www.ffbcf.org. For questions about the 3 Alarm Toy Drive, call 919-775-8242.

City Ready To Roll Out New Recycling Carts

New 96-Gallon Cart Will Have Residents Thinking Green

SANFORD, N.C. – The City of Sanford will soon make recycling easier and more convenient.

During the week of December 10, Waste Management will pick up its 18-gallon green recycling bins from all residences inside Sanford’s city limits on their regularly scheduled pickup day. In place of the bins, the City has contracted Cascade Cart Solutions to deliver new, blue 96-gallon roll-out recycling carts between December 10 and December 18.

Many recyclable items wind up in landfills because residents either don’t know the items can be recycled or can’t fit the item in their small bins. Typically overlooked items include phone books, milk and juice cartons, glass jars and bottles, and pie tins.

“We hope this larger cart encourages more residents to recycle,” says Larry Craig, Solid Waste Superintendent with the City of Sanford. “And we hope those who already recycle will fill their new carts with even more items,” he notes.

No resident will be left unsure about what can be recycled and what can’t. The new blue carts will have a full-color infographic molded right into the top of the lid that shows the recycling categories. The infographic also has a list of non-recyclables, which includes light bulbs, yard waste, and hazardous materials.

With the new carts comes an updated recycling schedule, Craig points out. Pickup will change from every week to every other week. Inside each cart, residents will find a brochure that explains the change, including a pickup schedule. Brochures will be labeled yellow or green according to the week your cart will be emptied.

For more information about the new carts or for a copy of the updated pickup schedule, call the City of Sanford’s Service Center at 919-775-8247.
